Statuses

What do the different statuses mean?

Statuses can be confusing. What do they mean? Should you do something different in IV3 based on a registration's status?

The statuses and their definition vary by state and are transferred directly into IV3 with the voter file from the state. Our stance is that if they are on the file and the addresses don't match, they still need to be cleaned off regardless of status. So, you can still challenge records regardless of status... with one exception: "cancelled" status. You can select "Do Not Challenge" if you come across a registration with a cancelled status.

If you prefer to focus on active registrations only, click on the red “View Active” button under the “Moved From Registered Address” section. This will filter out any registrations that do not have an active status.

Here are some status definitions. Remember statuses vary by state so if you want more detailed information than what we are providing we recommend reaching out to your state or county elections office for clarity.

Suspense means the registrar at your elections office is not certain of your residential address. That usually happens because mail was returned as undeliverable or the registrar has received information indicating the voter no longer resides at the address it has on record.

Cancelled generally means the registration is designated to be removed but hasn't been, for whatever reason.

Active...That ones pretty self explanatory :)

Inactive can vary by state. Generally it means the voter is registered and eligible to vote, but has been placed on inactive status for reasons such as undeliverable mail or failure to vote for a period of time. Here are some ways a voter can get their registration back to active status:

  • Vote

  • Return the notice sent by the Secretary of State's Office

  • Update voter registration address

  • Renew driver's license or ID card

  • Contact your local county elections office

CanIVote.org is a great way to check your voter registration status.
