How Do College Students Register to Vote?

Voter registration options for college students are different. Here's how.

College students have some flexibility when it comes to their registration location.

They can choose to remain registered at their home address OR they can change and update their registration to their address where they attend school and vote there. Either one is legal, however they cannot legally be registered and vote in both.

In IV3’s non-standard addresses, we often see college dorms associated with commercial addresses. A commercial address is not grounds for a challenge. It simply warrants a deeper investigation. We recommend looking at the google map link to determine what type of building the commercial address is. If you find it is a college dorm we recommend the following:

  1. Only challenge registrations that are 6 years old or older. It is highly unlikely that a student will not remain in the same dorm for more than 6 years.

  2. Submit the college dorm challenges separately to your local county election office. Be sure to explain the situation and acknowledge that you recognize that dorms are a permitted registration address, but that these records may merit further investigation as they are more than 6 years old.
